Naha Tug of War

One of several groups in the parade showing their strength in balancing an extremely heavy banner and pole. There were often several who would approach with support staffs to ensure the pole didn't tip over.

Parade sounds of the sea, a central part of the Okinawan economy.

The Tug of War is traditionally between East and West Naha with the West representing the farmers and the East representing the fisherman. Whichever side won was supposed to be prosperous for that year. We represented the West side and lost, but went down with a fight, pulling for over 30 mins in spurts as directed by the men standing on the rope.
