Annual Ikebana Flower Exhibition in Naha

Ikebana International hosted their annual Ikebana Flower Show in Naha on Sunday focusing on "friendship through flowers."Posted by Picasa

Many of the artists used wood ingeniously to pull the arrangement together in lieu of a vase. Posted by Picasa

Some artists were able to skillfully manipulate only a few evergreen branches to create a stunning arrangement, Posted by Picasa

You've got to appreciate the tropical foliage available on this island! Posted by Picasa

An interesting contrast of flowers with evergreens. Posted by Picasa

Many artists chose unique containers for their arrangements. Posted by Picasa

I loved this one with these yellow pods. I'm not sure they're edible, but I've seen them growing in neighbors' yards. Posted by Picasa

I was able to work with lovely peach blossoms like these in my first Ikebana class. Posted by Picasa

Another unique presentation. Almost like a topiary. Posted by Picasa

This had an interesting combination of elements, including twine. Posted by Picasa

How delicate...These small bottles remind me of ones my mother-in-law has. Posted by Picasa

Ahhhh orchids... Posted by Picasa

More peach blossoms in a basket. Posted by Picasa

Azaleas, greens and pods that look like Peonies, perhaps from Mainland. Posted by Picasa

This was another one of my favorites, using several elements to pull the arrangement together. Posted by Picasa

This one reminded me of a Mid-Summer Night's Dream, complete with little green apples. ;) Posted by Picasa

A closer look...These purple flowers suspended upside down almost look dried. Posted by Picasa

I noticed several of the wooden elements were spray painted black or white for a unique effect. Some artists enjoy using the metal coils too. Posted by Picasa

Exploring Kokusai Street in Naha

After the flower show, I decided to explore the famous shopping district of Kokusai Street. Here is a blurry view of the entrance to one of many side street malls. Posted by Picasa

A view of the inside of the side-street mall, a maze of stores of every variety imaginable. Posted by Picasa

Green onions anyone?? Posted by Picasa

This restaurant looked inviting. Posted by Picasa

I came across this calligraphy artist on this side street. Posted by Picasa
